{"id":908,"date":"2020-04-13T22:11:52","date_gmt":"2020-04-13T22:11:52","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.chandamama.in\/story\/?p=908"},"modified":"2020-04-13T22:11:53","modified_gmt":"2020-04-13T22:11:53","slug":"an-amazing-english-word","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.chandamama.in\/story\/2020\/04\/13\/an-amazing-english-word\/","title":{"rendered":"An Amazing English Word"},"content":{"rendered":"<span class=\"span-reading-time rt-reading-time\" style=\"display: block;\"><span class=\"rt-label rt-prefix\">Reading Time: <\/span> <span class=\"rt-time\"> 2<\/span> <span class=\"rt-label rt-postfix\">minutes<\/span><\/span>\n<p>An amazing confusing 2 letter English word. \u2026.<br>English is a crazy language, here we want to bring one word which everyone knows<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A reminder that one word in the English language that<br>can be a noun, a verb, an adverb, an adjective, and a preposition.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The word is &#8221; UP &#8220;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This two-letter word in English has more meanings than<br>any other two-letter word, and that word is\u2026 you know now it is &#8220;UP&#8221; .<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>It is listed in the dictionary as an [adv.], [prep.], [adj.], [n] or [v].<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It&#8217;s easy to understand (UP) meaning toward the sky or<br>at the top of the list, but when we awaken in the morning,<br>why do we &#8220;wake UP&#8221;?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>At a meeting, why does a topic &#8220;come UP&#8221;?<br>Why do we &#8220;speak UP&#8221;, and<br>why are the officers &#8220;UP for election&#8221; and<br>why is it &#8220;UP&#8221; to the admin to &#8220;write UP&#8221; a report?<br>We &#8220;call UP&#8221; our friends, &#8220;brighten UP&#8221; a room, &#8220;polish UP&#8221;<br>the silver, &#8220;warm UP&#8221; the leftover food and &#8220;clean UP&#8221; the bathroom\/kitchen.<br>We &#8220;lock UP&#8221; the apartment and &#8220;fix UP&#8221; the old car.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>At other times, this little word has real special meaning\u2026<br>People &#8220;stir UP&#8221; trouble, &#8220;line UP&#8221; for tickets,<br>&#8220;work UP&#8221; an appetite, and &#8220;think UP&#8221; excuses.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To be dressed is one thing but to be &#8220;dressed UP&#8221; is special.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And this &#8220;UP&#8221; is confusing:<br>A drain must be &#8220;opened UP&#8221; because it is &#8220;stopped UP&#8221;.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We &#8220;open UP&#8221; a store in the morning but we<br>&#8220;close it UP&#8221; at night. We seem to be pretty &#8220;mixed UP&#8221; about &#8220;UP&#8221;!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To be knowledgeable about the proper uses of &#8220;UP&#8221;,<br>&#8220;look UP&#8221; the word &#8220;UP&#8221; in the dictionary.<br>In a desk-sized dictionary, it &#8220;takes UP&#8221; almost 1\/4 of the page<br>and can &#8220;add UP&#8221; to about thirty definitions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you &#8220;are UP&#8221; to it, you might try &#8220;building UP&#8221; a list of the<br>many ways &#8220;UP&#8221; is used.
