{"id":5058,"date":"2021-10-12T01:09:13","date_gmt":"2021-10-12T01:09:13","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.chandamama.in\/story\/?p=5058"},"modified":"2021-10-12T01:09:14","modified_gmt":"2021-10-12T01:09:14","slug":"a-boring-vacation","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.chandamama.in\/story\/2021\/10\/12\/a-boring-vacation\/","title":{"rendered":"A Boring Vacation"},"content":{"rendered":"<span class=\"span-reading-time rt-reading-time\" style=\"display: block;\"><span class=\"rt-label rt-prefix\">Reading Time: <\/span> <span class=\"rt-time\"> 3<\/span> <span class=\"rt-label rt-postfix\">minutes<\/span><\/span>\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>A Boring Vacation<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI don\u2019t want to stay here\u201d&nbsp; Jimmy whispered to his mother at the breakfast table.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">His mother ignored him and continued to butter her toast.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Jimmy looked at his father who was hidden behind his newspaper, but he was unable to catch his attention.&nbsp; He went back to eating his bowl of cornflakes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cSo Jimmy, would you like to come for a walk with me after your mum and dad have left?\u201d his grandfather asked.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This time, Jimmy pretended to ignore him, but only until he got a sharp kick from his mother under the table.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI\u2019d rather do my homework,\u201d he said without looking up from his breakfast.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A few minutes later, Jimmy stood with his parents as they were getting ready to get into their car and head back home.&nbsp; His mother took him aside and sat down on her knees as she looked into her son\u2019s eyes.&nbsp; \u201cJimmy, we spoke about this.&nbsp; It\u2019s only for two weeks.&nbsp; Your father will be out of town and I will be at work.&nbsp; There will be no one to take care of you while you are at home.&nbsp; Granny and grandpa have been kind enough to offer to look after you.&nbsp; You agreed to this arrangement.&nbsp; Why are you fighting it now?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Tears welled up in little Jimmy\u2019s eyes \u201cI don\u2019t like it here mom.&nbsp; It\u2019s out in the wilderness.&nbsp; The nearest mall is 45 minutes away.&nbsp; There are no video games and worst of all, no internet.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">His mother wanted to respond but his father walked over, just then.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cYou\u2019ll be fine, won\u2019t you Champ?\u201d he asked, ruffling Jimmy\u2019s hair, the way he always did.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cYes dad,\u201d Jimmy said, fighting back tears and trying to put on a smile.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">His father bent over and wrapped him in a bear hug.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Minutes later, Jimmy was standing on the porch of his grandparent\u2019s house, looking at the cloud of smoke left behind by his father\u2019s car.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The next few days were a blur.&nbsp; Jimmy woke early, gobbled up his breakfast, and ran back into his room before his grandparents could ask him anything.&nbsp; He stayed in there the whole day and came out only during mealtimes, only to return back swiftly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">KNOCK! KNOCK!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cJimmy! Jimmy!\u201d he heard someone call in the middle of the night.&nbsp; Jimmy got up, but he was too dazed to get out of bed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He heard his door creak open and his grandfather\u2019s head peak through.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cAwake?\u201d the older man asked.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cNo\u201d Jimmy replied, not hiding his irritation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWell wake up then.&nbsp; We\u2019re going bird-watching.&nbsp; I\u2019ll see you down in ten minutes.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He had left the room before Jimmy had a chance to bombard him with questions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The old man must be out of his head, Jimmy thought.&nbsp; He got out of bed and got dressed anyway.&nbsp; It was still dark when Jimmy looked out of his bedroom window.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWhat does he think we will be able to watch in this pitch-black darkness\u201d he wondered.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">An hour later, Jimmy and his grandfather were sitting on tall stools surrounded by waist-high grass.&nbsp; His grandfather was setting a pair of binoculars.&nbsp; He passed them to Jimmy and asked him to observe the sky above them.&nbsp; The sun was just rising and the sky was a beautiful pinkish-orange.&nbsp; There wasn\u2019t a bird in sight, but Jimmy kept the binoculars trained to where his grandfather pointed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A few moments later, he could hear a distinct crackling above.&nbsp; It sounded as if a hundred geese were communicating at the same time.&nbsp; Within moments, the sky was filled with migratory birds flying in an inverted V pattern.&nbsp; There were flocks and flocks of them and not a single one of them broke file.&nbsp; They flew together, their arms flapping in unison as if they were performing a well-choreographed dance sequence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A sigh escaped Jimmy\u2019s lips.&nbsp; He had never seen anything so beautiful before.&nbsp; But it was his grandfather who had the broadest grin.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cCan we go again tomorrow?\u201d Jimmy asked his grandfather at dinner that night.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201c We can, but I don\u2019t know if they will come.&nbsp; They don\u2019t come every day.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThen how did you know they will come today?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">His grandfather didn\u2019t respond.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cHe\u2019s been going there every day to note their pattern of arrival,\u201d his grandmother said, a few moments later \u201che wanted you to see something beautiful.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Jimmy\u2019s eyes filled with tears again.&nbsp; While he had been sulking in his room, his grandfather had been waking up early every morning and waiting patiently to observe the pattern of the migratory birds.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cGrandpa, grandmom, thank you,\u201d Jimmy said, his voice heavy with emotion.&nbsp; \u201cI love you.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">From then on, Jimmy waited for his summer holidays eagerly every year.&nbsp; It was the only time he got to go bird-watching with his grandfather.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p><span class=\"span-reading-time rt-reading-time\" style=\"display: block;\"><span class=\"rt-label rt-prefix\">Reading Time: <\/span> <span class=\"rt-time\"> 3<\/span> <span class=\"rt-label rt-postfix\">minutes<\/span><\/span>A Boring Vacation \u201cI don\u2019t want to stay here\u201d&nbsp; Jimmy whispered to his mother at the breakfast table.
