Still, much will remain hidden behind the clouds of \ntime.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>However, old records and memoirs of the British officers working in \nIndia show us glimpses of several forgotten episodes of the struggle by \ndifferent sections of our people to win freedom from the colonial \nrulers. For example, two years before the great rebellion of 1857, the \ntribal inhabitants of the Birbhum region, the Santhals, declared \nthemselves free! \u201cWe\u2019re children of God and servants of none!\u201d they \nsaid. They had been oppressed and exploited merci\u00adlessly by the English \nEast India Company, which tried to take away even the last pie they \nearned through their hard toil.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Company men made fifty elephants drunk and let them&nbsp; loose on the\n Santhal hamlets. The elephants trampled upon hun\u00addreds of men, women, \nand children to death. Next, when thousands of them, armed with bows and\n arrows, marched forward to face the Company, they were attacked with \nguns and cannons. But they would not retreat.
